Brewers close out D-Backs; NLCS bound

Milwaukee – Nayjer Morgan’s one-out single in the bottom of the 10th sending Carlos Gomez home, scores the winning run as the Brewers held on for their first postseason series win since the Reagan Era, 3-2 over the D-Backs Friday night to advance to the NL Championship Series where they’ll take on the winner of the Cardinals/Phillies NL Division Series.

Arizona rallied in the top of the ninth, after Willie Bloomquist’s safety squeezed scored Gerardo Parra from third to tie the game at 2-2.

After both teams went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and top of the 10th, Gomez singles to left field then immediately steals second.

With the count 2-2, the man nicknamed, “Tony Plush”, Morgan singles up the middle sending 44,028 towel-waving fans at Miller Park into a frenzy as Gomez crosses home plate to end the game.

Red Birds fly into NLCS

Philadelphia – Chris Carpenter pitched a beauty of a game on full rest, going the distance for the Cardinals in a 1-0 series clinching victory against the Phillies in their NL Division Series Friday night.

Rafael Furcal’s triple to center in the top of the first, followed by Skip Schumaker’s scoring double after a 10-pitch at bat; was all the runs Carpenter (1-0) needed as he allowed only three hits and no walks on 110 pitches while striking out three.

The Phillies inability to score any runs wasted a gutsy performance by Roy Halladay (0-1), who went eight innings, allowing one run on six hits and seven strikeouts on 126 pitches.

Ryan Howard, who fell down in pain on an apparent ankle injury in his final at-bat, along with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Hunter Pence, were a combined 1-15 tonight. The Phillies left four on base and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals will take on their NL Central foe, the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Championship Series.
