NLDS-Game #2-St.Louis leads 2-0
Busch Stadium; ST.LOUIS--The St. Louis Cardinals never had to look over their shoulders in Game Two of the NLDS Thursday night at Busch Stadium as they took command of the ball game against the San Diego Padres scoring twice in the third, fourth, and seventh innings of the contest.
In the third inning, St Louis’s David Eckstein hit into a field's choice that allowed Abraham Nunez to score from third making the score 1-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
Then Albert Pujols walked with the bases loaded as Yadier Molina scored from third making it 2-0 St.Louis.
In the fourth inning Molina got aboard on a fielders choice which allowed Mark Grudzelanek to score, increasing St Louis’s lead to 3-0 over San Diego. Eckstein hit into a sacrifice right back to Padres pitcher Pedro Astacio which allowed Nunez to score from third base making it 4-0 St.Louis to close out the fourth.
The Cardinals finished up their offensive attack when in the seventh when Reggie Sanders ripped a two run double to left field putting the Cardinals up 6-1. The Cardinals were to get on the scored board one more time in the
The Cardinals went onto win the ball game 7-1 and have a 2-0 lead in this best of five series which now moves to San Diego for two games starting on Saturday.
The Cardinals also got some great pitching help from Mark Mulder who is now (1-0 ERA 1.35) in the playoffs , going 6.2 innings, giving up eight hits, one run, one walk, and four strike outs.
Astacio didn't fair as well for the Padres he went four innings, was hit for four runs, four hits, three walks, and struck out four.
JC and Kenny G's footnotes: Next up for both clubs in game three in San Diego an 8:05 PM PDT start at Petco Park on Saturday night. Both clubs will have Friday off but will get back to work on Saturday as the Cardinals will start right hander Matt Morris who'll match up against the Padres Woody Williams a right hander.
For San Diego this is a must win if not the Cardinals will advance to the next round and wait for the out come of the NLDS between Houston and Atlanta.
NLDS-Game #2-series is tied at 1-1
Turner Field ATLANTA--The Atlanta Braves who were on the receiving end of the offense wrath of the Houston Astros last Wednesday night did a turn about Thursday night coming out slugging on the Astros with a 6-2 victory after getting beat by five runs in game one 10-5 by Houston in Game 1.
The Braves scored three runs after trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Brian McCann ripped a three run homer to put the Braves on top 3-1. Adam LaRouche belted a double in the bottom of the third, scoring Andruw Jones, and Chipper Jones, to make the score 5-1 in favor of Atlanta.
The Braves finally added their last offensive contribution scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Andruw Jones singled to center scoring Giles to make it 6-1 and to cap it off in the 7th when Jeff Francoeur singled to right to score Jones as 7-1 was the final for a Braves game victory knotting up the series at one a piece.
The Astros starter Roger Clemens pitched four innings taking the loss (0-1 ERA 1.29) went seven innings, gave up seven hits, a run, a walk, and five strike outs.
JC and Kenny G's footnotes: The series moves back to Minute Maid Field for game three. The Braves will start Jorge Sosa a right hander against fellow right hander Ray Oswalt for the Astros. First pitch is slated for 5:35 PM PDT.
