Sportsradio: Miguel looks like the A's are trying for a late run for the Wild Card it's just too bad they didn't have another month of the regular season to go maybe they'd have a shot at it?

Nah. Teams are too far out in front. The A's are doing just fine, preparing young players to be excited about next season. That's what they should be doing. They are one of the hottest teams in baseball, and finishing strong can carry over into the next year. Just ask the 49ers.

Sportsradio: Who do you like that can put the A's line up over the top in the free agency in the off season, one name that has come up is the Red Sox Jason Bay and General Manager Billy Beane has been prospecting him. What do you like about Bay's make up?

Jason Bay is a very good player, one of the very best ever to come out of Canada. I don't know that he's an answer for the A's -- he might more reasonably be an answer for the Giants. The A's have some reasonably good outfielders, with Ryan Sweeney and Rajai Davis heading the list. I'm not sure they would part ways with Jack Cust and spend big dollars on Bay instead -- the upgrade would be real, but probably not worth the quadrupling of salary involved.

Sportsradio: The chase meanwhile is on in the N.L. Wild Card with the Giants out by 3.5 games with 14 regular season games left do you like their chances and how concerned are you about Brad Penny's performance after giving up seven runs on his old team the Dodgers?

What, me worry? Guys have bad outings. Ask Tim Lincecum. As to your real question, no, I don't like the Giants' chances, now 4 out with 12 to play as I write this. But they've done the nearly impossible all season, and there's no reason they can't continue to do so. Just about a dozen years ago, they were 5 out with 10 to play, and yet only had to go to a playoff game with the Cubs because of Neifi *^*&ing Perez' 9-inning homer off Robb Nen. Perez was, by the way, a Rockie. It's always the Rockies, isn't it?
