The two-time defending UFL Champions opened their third season with a 23-17 road victory against the Sacramento Mountain Lions. 19,938 football fans packed Hornet Stadium Saturday night to watch the UFL kick off the season that almost never was.
With rookie south-paw, Ryan Colburn (26-35, 256 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) under center for the M’Lions, it is a decisively different look from last year’s squad, which featured veteran NFL QB Daunte Culpepper at the helm.
The Mountain Lions drew first blood on a 43 yard field goal from Fabrizio Scaccia to take an early 3-0 lead. Las Vegas responded quickly, on the shoulders of Chase Clement (20-28, 233 yards) . Clement set-up the play with an 83 yard pass play to Samie Parker that put them in the Sacramento red zone. The reception was the longest in the storied history of the UFL. On the very next play, Clement strolled into the end zone to take the lead.
Sacramento’s offense stalled, with only a long missed Field Goal attempt, while the Locos added another score on DeDe Dorsey’s 11-yard rush to take a 17-3 lead into the half.
The Mountain Lions opened the second half with a 69-yard drive, which ended with Colburn finding Reggie Williams for a 3-yard score.
Las Vegas added a field goal before the end of the third quarter.
Two costly plays hurt Sacramento in the fourth quarter. Loco Marquis Floyd picked off Colburn and the M’Lions failed to convert a crucial fourth and one which set up another Las Vegas field goal.
Colburn found Tight End Kai Brown, on a drive that took a little too long, to add a final seven points.
After a tough scramble tonight, the Mountain Lions have a bye next week and return to Hornet Stadium on October 1, when they will host the Omaha Nighthawks.
