The Oakland Raiders sent their concerns on Sunday after learning of the shooting of San Diego Chargers linebacker Steve Foley after he was shot by an unidentified off duty Coronado police officer in front of his home Sunday morning at 3:47AM.

The off duty officer pulled Foley and his friend Lisa Maree Gaut, over for weaving in the lanes going towards Foley's home. Foley was approaching the officer who identified himself as a police officer and told Foley to stay in the car as Foley began walking towards the officer he reached towards his waistband and the unidentified officer fired three shots hitting Foley.

"The officer fired two rounds at the vehicle, the male then came at the officer and put his hand by his waistband and he officer fired at him." said Sheriff Lt. Dennis Brugus.

Apparently according to the off duty officer, Gaut was driving the car near the officer and she was told to stop and that's when the officer fired two shots at the vehicle and then Foley came out of the car and was told to stop approaching and was shot three times.

Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer said that the injuries sustained by Foley were not life threatening "all we're worried about is that he's o.k." said Coach Schottenhimer.

Paramedics were called and rushed Foley to Sharp Memorial Hospital for bullet wounds and he was undergoing surgery. "We have confirmed that linebacker Steve Foley was shot early this morning. We'll try to provide more information as it becomes available. Right now all our thoughts are with Steve." said Chargers spokesman Bill Johnson.

This was Foley's second run in with the law and it also involved alcohol the first time was back on April 21st when he resisted arrest and was booked for battery and public drunkenness.

The San Diego District Attorney's office said they were not pursuing charges in that case. Gault maybe facing charges but it's not clear what the charges will be other than failure to stop at the officer request.

The Raiders will host the Chargers next Monday night September 11 at the Coliseum for the opening night between both teams. Depending on the seriousness of Foley's injuries he could be out for at least one month at best before beginning physical therapy.
