NFL: 18 games, too far

There seems to be no limit to how pure unadulterated greed will motivate the NFL and the team owners to pursue a " a game too far ". I'm reminded of the World War II movie " A Bridge Too Far " about the allies getting stuck in a no win battle.

Right now teams are scheduled to play overseas in England and other foreign locations. The NFL has taken over the media with the less than stellar NFL Network and now the 18 day schedule. Before fans lick their chops and the owners count their extra money lets examine reality.

One of the biggest problems of Pro football is injuries. In training camp, early season and always, all teams are concerned with injuries. You might say that the postseason picture is really determined by the relative health of every team's players. " To the winner goes the spoils ". Adding two regular season games is just risking having more injuries. Practicly the league will have to expand the rosters or face the possibility of teams having to use backups in the playoffs ! The fans will dig that ! Not to mention the concussion problem now forcing so many players to retire early.

Lets look at the changes to scheduling. The playoffs and the Super Bowl will be pushed back and possibly conflict with other sports. There is also the risk that fans will experience a sensory overload with all the NFL related media coverage. Players are doing reality shows, theres all access shows, talk shows. Whats next ? A NFL circus with league executives playing clowns ? When the Scaryone rolls out of the sack will I eat NFL cereal for breakfast ?

There is some speculation that the Player's Association will have leverage in upcoming labor negotiations because of the proposed extended football season. I hope the players balance the risk of a career ending injury with the negligible rewards of getting paid for two more regular season games.

The danger for the team owners and the NFL is just what constitutes enough when looking at success. Just like the dice player on a lucky run at the table will another throw break him or will there be a movie like happy ending.

Every fool knows you never beat the house ! In this case the NFL and the teams owners are rolling the dice again trying to get more of a good thing. Remember all good things come to an end just remember the Player's strike Major League Baseball experienced. Sometimes even steroids can't bring back the dead !
