The Monarchs returned home Tuesday and snapped their three-game skid with a 67-59 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Sacramento not only found their way to the win column for the first time since the All-Star break, but also exacted a measure of revenge for two defeats at the hands of the Sparks last month. The victory evens the season series at two apiece, with both teams winning on their respective home courts.
Sacramento’s Ticha Penicherio led all scorers with 19 points. The Monarchs veteran point guard also added six assists, four rebounds, three steals and only one turnover in 29 minutes of play.
The Monarchs held the Sparks to 25% shooting in the first half and took a five-point lead into the locker room. Despite the tremendous performance by Penicherio and the stand-out performance by Sacramento’s defense, the Sparks were able to pull within one point with just over two minutes remaining the fourth quarter.
Penicherio scored four points and had an assist in the final two minutes, to put the icing on the cake and secure the victory for Sacramento.
The Monarchs play again this week, hosting the Indiana Fever Thursday at 11:30 at Arco Arena.
