SAN FRANCISCO--In an HBO interview with former BALCO chemist and the inventor of the Cream and Clear, Patrick Arnold, told host Bob Costas on HBO Sports, that there
is no doubt that Giants outfielder Barry Bonds and Tigers outfielder Gary Sheffield, were not only taking steroids but were also customers on the program when BALCO was up and running and in full swing.
Arnold said that he heard from BALCO founder Victor Conte when the two worked together at the lab that Bonds and Sheffield were using steroids. Arnold who was the inventor of "the Cream" and "the Clear" was privy to the participants information of the BALCO program when the Bay Area Laboratory was running in high gear in the late 90s and earlier this decade.
"I have a very strong feeling about it since he was on the program. And like everyone else, the program consisted of the clear." Arnold said. Sheffield stayed at Bonds' house in Los Altos when the two trained in the off-season together in 1998. Sheffield interviewed by Penthouse Magazine a few years back talked about the experience of staying in Bonds house about his aloofness and one time locking Sheffield out of the house and Sheffield left after several more strange experiences with Bonds. Sheffield never admitted steroid use or mentioned BALCO during that interview but in fact, the two did train with Greg Anderson together during that time.
Conte denied the assertion that he ever said that Bonds or Sheffield was on a steroid program. Conte served time in the BALCO investigation for steroid distribution. "The program I created for Barry was a comprehensive nutritional supplementation regimen and had nothing to do with the clear or any other anabolic steroids." Conte told the New York Times in response to Arnold's interview.
Arnold disagreed, first Bonds and Sheffield were paying customers at BALCO, and second they put BALCO on the map with introducing BALCO and Conte to other ball players who later used BALCO products. Yankees outfielder Jason Giambi and former Giant players Armando Rios, Bobby Estellia, Benny Santiago, AJ Pierznyski amongst a few were called in 2003 at the BALCO grand jury investigation for testimony.
Conte and even Bonds personal trainer Greg Anderson are loyal to the end to Bonds for giving BALCO tremendous business during this time and that is why Conte will never admit to Bonds or Sheffield being on a steroid use program out of being grateful to them for the business.
"That’s an ignorant statement," said Arnold who told the New York Times, "that's some sort of weird rationalization. No, he took steroids. This is a bona fide anabolic steroid," said Arnold in the HBO interview.
According to Bonds attorney Michael Rains he says Arnold or any other testimony about Bonds steroid use has been hearsay including statements by former Bonds business manager Steve Hoskins and Bonds ex-girlfriend Kimberly Bell who'll be a future pin up in the November 2007 Playboy issue in which she also does an interview regarding her relationship with Bonds.
Bonds who trails home run king Hank Aaron by two home runs, has also has been the subject of a possible indictment after the Grand Jury was extended on their one year anniversary last Thursday, one day before that Grand Jury and the BALCO investigation would have expired. Without this extension and Bonds would have been out the possibility of prosecution by the government, and Anderson would have been released from jail on his contempt charge.
The extension is expected to run until February 2008.
