Tonight' s game with the Chicago White Sox featured the return of future Hall of Famer, Omar Vizquel. Vizquel is now playing on his 5th major league team. Omar is now 43 years old and probably is in his last year as a player. He has had a wonderful career starting with the Seattle Mariners . He played there from 1989 to 1993. He was traded to Cleveland and played there from 1994 to 2004. With Vizquel at shortstop, the Indians won 2 American League pennants in 1995 and 1997. Vizquel joined the San Francisco Giants in 2005 and played with them for 4 seasons. Vizquel went to Texas for the 2009 season and now is with the White Sox. Vizquel is wearing number 11. That number was worn by the Hall of Fame shorstop, Luis Aparicio and has been "unretired" for Vizquel. Vizquel is now 43 years old and this will probably be his last season as a player. Vizquel played in tonight's game a got 2 hits. After the game,Vizque, when asked about retiring, was noncommittal. After his playing days are over, he hopes to manage a big league club.
Vizquel has won 11 gold gloves as a shortstop. He won 9 in a row in the American League and then won 2 more with the Giants. He has the highest career fielding average held by a shortstop,0.985. In addition, he is the all time leader in double plays made while playing shortstop. He has more hits than at shortstop except for Derek Jeter. He has been an all star . In 2007, he was inducted in the Hispanic Heritage baseball Museum Hall of Fame.
There is a plaque waiting for Omar at Cooperstown. It would be shocking if he did not get elected to the Hall in his first year of eligibilty.
