Tom Watson's near miss last Sunday was also his near win and think of this in prospective for a minute the number 59 was bantered about like a cheap suit over the weekend referring to Watson's age.
He's only one and half year younger than my Mother in Law (that's Kimberly's mom in case you didn't know) and to me what he did over the weekend was just absolutely riveting, tremendous, magnificent in fact superb that kind of thing.
Its was amazing to watch, I was so in aw, I never DVR golf but I had to put this on the DVR because it was so good and it got to the point right at the 18th hole when he had the eight footer that would have won it and then he babied it and then I was like, "oh crap" and sure enough he did and Stewart Cink just blew by him and basically that was that.
It was absolutely awesome it was a thrill, it inspired me, I read something on a certain more famous website than ours that Steve Ballesteros he had a brain tumor operation in October 2008 and Ballesteros wants to play in the Open in 2010 because of what Tom did.
Ballesteros is in his 50s there is still hope and no kidding I'm in awe! The headline in my paper read "Cinking feeling" which fits to the proper name to the party crasher known as Cink. Although Cink won it it was a sinking feeling when Watson missed the putt.
The leaderboard was so up and down there were ones who were out by a shot and by mistakes, Lee Westwood, Matt Goggin, and even Chris Wood couldn't get close. Heck, Luke Donald wanted to hit a putt on 18 and couldn't. Watson was in that same general area he had the right location on that eight foot putt, he wasn't behind the hole and yet he just babied it.
He tightened up at the wrong possible moment, oh man it was disappointing for those rooting for Watson in the crowds last Sunday. Up and down the leaderboard, I was riding that roller coaster, even one of the girls I worked with in the Sports Department said, "I was even watching it and I don't normally watch"
Can you imagine if Tiger made the cut it would have been Tom and the Tiger in that final group. It's all speculation now everybody could drool over the prospect. Tom Watson in the tournament would have been a very mondane tournament once Tiger left but Watson turned this tournament into something unforgettable even though he got beat. This tournament and I've covered golf for decades and this is on the top of the list, it tops Jack Nicholaus when he won the Masters in 86, it tops it a thousand times over.
TV ratings for Sunday over the top: ABC TV ratings for the tournament was a 3.9 that's up more than 15% from a year ago.
