The Connecticut Sun came into the Capital city fresh from a win over Seattle Monday night, and continued their winning ways by defeating the Sacramento Monarchs in overtime by the score of 82-78.
Sacramento, the leaders in the western conference, were handed heartbreak by Linsdey Whalen who scored 22 points in the game. The most important of those points were the two she hit on a lay-up with 4.1 seconds left in fourth quarter to force the extra period.
The Sacramento Monarchs were hot and cold all evening as they put together great runs. At one point the Monarchs went on a 24-5 run only to let the Sun back into the game in the third quarter.
Nykesha Sales led all players with 23 points for Connecticut.
Starter Nicole Powell and reserve Adrian Williams, who each added 15 points, for Coach Boucek, led the Monarchs.
The game was a chess match that was won by Coach Thibault of Connecticut. His spot use of his starting center Margo Dydek and his use of a zone defense frustrated the Monarchs outside shooters.
Coach Boucek’s rotation was confusing at best as she let her defensive players control the game during the last few minutes. With seconds on the clock she could have a put Yolanda Griffith back into the game to try to score against Dydek, who she was able to seemly score at will against.
In the overtime Boucek did not play her star Kara Lawson until the final 27.8 seconds when she came in and gave Sacramento a chance to get back into the game but the lead was too great.
At 12-8 Sacramento looks good from the outside, but have a lack of offensive against a zone and periods of inability to score that could mean an early playoff exit.
Both teams take a break for the All Star game in Washington D.C. on the 15th. The Monarchs send Yolanda Griffith, Rebekkah Brunson and Kara Lawson. The Monarchs take on the San Antonio Spurs in San Antonio on the 20th of July.
