Sacramento (12-6) headed into New York feeling great after a win in Minnesota but ran into a tough Liberty team (9-8) that was looking for some payback for an defeat at the hands of the Monarchs in Sacramento earlier in the season. The Liberty took control of the game in the first quarter and cruised to a 71-61 victory at Madison Square Garden.

Erin Thorn and teammate Catherine Kraayeveld each scored 13 points to pace the Liberty. The Liberty improved to 10-8 with the victory; New York had struggled earlier in the season but has won three of their last four games.

Rebekkah Brunson continues to be the steady force for Sacramento by scoring 18 points. Sacramento shot a poor 32 percent from the field in the Liberty’s first home game in nearly two weeks. New York led early and had a 48-28 lead at half time.

Sacramento came out strong in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 12-3 run but could close the enormous deficit.

The Monarchs return home on Thursday to take on the Connecticut Sun at 7:00 p.m. to close out the first half of the season before the All-Star game on July 15th.
