Baseball is a sport with a ton of records. There are records for a season as well as records for a career. The most revered record is the career record for most home runs hit by a player. Currently, the record is held by Barry Bonds. Bonds set the record in 2007. He hit 762 home runs in his great career.
In fact, there are just 6 players that have hit more than 600 home runs in all of baseball history. Barry Bonds leads the way followed by Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey, Jar and Sammy Sosa. The 600 club will soon have a new member. That player is Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez, after tonight’s game needs 3 more home runs to become the 7th member of this exclusive club. In tonight’s game, A-Rod had 2 home runs. Number 596 and 597. Home run number 596 was a grand slam home run hit in the 3rd inning off the A’s All-Star pitcher, Trevor Cahill. Cahill was victimized again when A-Rod blasted a solo job for his 597th career homer. The Grand Slam was the 21st for A-Rod. He is now tied for second place, along with Manny Ramirez, for most Grand Slams in a career. Lou Gehrig holds the record. Gehrig hit 23 Slams in his great career with the Yankees and he did it without the aid of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids and/or amphetamines.
A-Rod now has become the player that has hit the most home runs against the A’s as a visiting player. Rodriguez will be the youngest player to reach the 600 home run plateau and if he stays healthy, there is a good chance that he will hold the all-time career home run record.
Note- A’s pitcher, Trevor Cahill who is just 22 years old, surrendered the 2 home runs to A-Rod. Cahill said that he was not nervous facing the Yankees. He said he was amped up for the game but was disappointed in the outcome. Cahill will be going to the All-Star game next week representing the A’s on the American League squad. His teammate will be Alex Rodriguez. Asked how he felt about that, Cahill thought for a second then flashed a big smile.
