OAKLAND--The Oakland A's are trying to move to Fremont just down the road from Oakland and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums has not done very much in the way to stop the move of the Athletics and as a matter of fact has held talks with A's owner Lew Wolf and they both have a hand shake on moving the team.
What their saying is don't worry it'll be alright the A's will be just down the road in Fremont at Auto Mall a neighborhood which is five miles from the nearest BART station. The A's and Fremont might side step a vote for the team move in 2011 and get around it and just say since the property is privately funded there is no need for an election to approve a baseball stadium for he A's.
There are many loop holes that team can now use to get around any election for a new stadium and don't be fooled public money will be involved in trying to fund a building of a new park. For example just look what just happened to the Seattle Sonics they are packing up their goods and heading for Oklahoma City.
The OKC owners have agreed to leave the Super Sonics old colors and other memorabilia in the City's charge but there is no guarantee that Seattle would ever get another NBA franchise again. David Stern said Wednesday that after the City renovates Key Arena a $45 million redo he might consider bringing a new franchise to Seattle and call them the "new Seattle Super Sonics".
Sounds like something that the old Cleveland Browns did move away and Cleveland got a new franchise and got their old Dog Pound name back. This has left a bad taste in the mouths of the people of Seattle. If and when they ever get their NBA franchise they'll be looking at old film and photos of a team gone by until they can get Key spruced up sometime in 2009 but still there is no guarantee that the Sonics will be back in their green, white and gold.
It's weird to lose a franchise; it's something you never think about until it's gone. It's like losing a best friend and someone you knew for many years kind of like the old Kingdome in a way. Well may not the Kingdome. But like the City of Oakland and now Seattle when the A's and Sonics are really history and baseball or basketball is not played in their respective towns any more you'll know the full force of reality that everyone will be longing for their old best friend back.
