2 MCDOWELL, Graeme NIR -3 - 210
3 WOODS, Tiger USA -1 - 212
T4 HAVRET, Gregory FRA Even - 213
T4 ELS, Ernie RSA Even 213
6 MICKELSON, Phil USA +1 - 214
Yesterday was the Phil Show and today was the Tiger Show. It was clear and sunny with some late wind. AND it was moving day and that is what happened.
PHIL MICHELSON Moved from second to sixth
Phil was looking over his approach on the par-4, fourth hole and pulled out an iron for his second shot. Three-wood, three-wood, three-wood! came the shout from someone in the gallery. This will be plenty, Mickelson responded, iron in hand. The approach shot landed in a greenside bunker. It was a battle for Phil today but he is still in the hunt.
Phil said Yeah, Sunday at the Open a lot of things can happen. And I'll be off with the leaders, and I need to get hot in those first 7 holes that you can make birdies. You can makeup a lot of ground if you make birdies Sunday at the U.S. Open. It will be challenging to make up that many shots.
TIGER WOODS Moved from tied at 25th to third.
A 66 today, but I suppose the more significant number is 31 on the backside. Tiger had a total of three birdies on the first two days and 7 today. Tiger was 7 under for the last 15 holes. The field averaged 39+ for the back side and Tiger had a 31 today with birdies on 16, 17 and 18.
One of the more notable shots was the second shot at 18. A cut three wood from 270 yards over the Pacific and on to the green.
I felt the shot at 8, and then I just kept telling myself I needed to get back to even par for the Tournament. That was the game plan starting out, and I'm at even par and I can turn around this back nine, shoot something around 4 under par; and I should be right back to even par for the Tournament and just happened to do one better.
As Tiger goes into tomorrow he is in third. He started the day tied for 25th, who knows what's going to happen here tomorrow.
DUSTIN JOHNSON Moved from 16th to first.
I started off well. I drove it well today. I hit a lot of fairways. If I hit a lot of fairways I'm usually going to play pretty well. I was controlling my irons, especially the distance, pretty well today for the most part. I had a couple of loose shots. But other than that I got it back together coming down the stretch and made two good birdies. The first time I walked out here I loved the place. And I really enjoy playing golf here. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful place. And I just really enjoy it.
Dustin won the AT&T at Pebble Beach in 2009 and 2010 so he likes Pebble. He leads the PGA in eagles this year with 12 until today when he eagled the fourth hole hitting an iron off the tee.
GRAEME McDOWELL: Moved from first to second.
I would have taken level par before I stepped on the tee today. It was a breezy day today. I think the USGA firmed the greens up for us. But I didn't quite hit it as good today as I did yesterday, perhaps. But to shoot 71 on this layout, not being in control of my game, I'm pretty happy with that. I felt like I did my job. Three back, going into tomorrow, I think that's a good position, I'm looking forward to it.
ERNIE ELS: Moved from second to fourth.
I need to play a good round of golf. I need to play a steady round of golf. I need to make some birdies early on and try to have a good finish. I think the finish is going to be tough for the leaders tomorrow, for anybody. But I think that's where you could maybe make up some ground and obviously the first couple of holes where you have a few birdie opportunities.
GREGORY HAVRET: Moved from tied at 14th to fourth.
I really, really love golf. It's been ten years as a pro, and you can't imagine how I enjoy those tournaments and those moments. First thing, I enjoy my life. It's fantastic to travel and play those tournaments, especially here, of course, it's the best ever, here. I've played so many great courses. And, yeah, then I struggled a lot to qualify for The Open. So I came back with a belly putter, which is the one I won in Loch Lomond and the year after. So it's a good thing for me.
ALSO OF NOTE:
JAIDEE ACES NO. 5
THONGCHAI JAIDEE of Thailand made a hole-in-one in the third round at the 181-yard, par-3 fifth. It was the first hole-in-one of this championship and seventh hole-in-one in U.S. Opens held at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
