This is the fifth time Pebble Beach has hosted the prestigious event. Jack Nicklaus won in 1972, Tom Watson’s chip in victory in 1982, Tom Kite’s win in 1992 and Tiger Woods run away 15 stoke victory in 2000.

This year Pebble Beach is a different course from Opens in the past. Four greens have been rebuilt, 16 bunkers have been altered or added, trees have been added to six fairways, and the course has been increased in length for a total of 7012 yards.

Pebble Beach Golf Course is a national treasure and it continues to be improved. The first hole was strengthened with an extension of the green side bunker and a rebuilt green. The second hole was lengthened by adding a new championship tee position. The third hole added thee new fairway bunkers and a rebuilt green. The most strategic change will bring the Pacific Ocean into play on the sixth hole. The elimination of rough on the right side of the sixth fairway will allow an off-center tee shot to find its way into the ocean. The fifteenth hole will also require a precision shot from the tee as 5 new bunkers have decreased the landing area.

Driving accuracy will be very important in this year’s Open due to these course changes. In order to score well deft skill on the greens will also be key. With the fairways shrinking from 40 yards in width to around 25 yards, the added bunkers and the hard fast conditions, the leader’s final putt on Father’s Day will be a well earned celebration.
