CHP investigators were looking for the three men who allegedly stopped and attacked KFBK "Sports Guy" Pat Walsh along I-80 near Applegate Tuesday in a suspected road rage incident. The radio sports anchor was driving east on Interstate 80 north of Auburn when he slowed down to allow a big rig to pull ahead of him just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, Walsh said. As he hung back to allow the truck to accelerate up an inclining grade, Walsh said a tan Oldsmobile SUV trailing a car dolly darted up from behind him.
"Here comes this car, barreling out of nowhere," Walsh said. "I thought it was going to sideswipe me."Walsh said the driver and two other men were hanging out of the SUV, yelling and flashing obscene gestures. Trying to escape a confrontation, Walsh said he sped up, traveling up to 80 mph to try and get away from the trailing driver.
But when the SUV showed no signs of breaking off its pursuit, Walsh pulled over near the Applegate truck scales to try and defuse the situation as the SUV cut off his vehicle.
Once he got out of the car, Walsh said he realized the older driver and the two younger men in their 20s, believed to be the driver's son and a friend, were not open to conversation."They didn't want to hear an explanation. They didn't want to hear an apology," Walsh said. "The dad said, 'That's it. Let's take him out, boys.'"
Walsh said the three men encircled him, put him in a hold and landed several blows to his face and body before throwing him down a roadside embankment and speeding away.
Walsh suffered a gash to the head that required six stitches as well as a swollen jaw and bruised kidneys. Several witnesses saw the attack and called 911 as others rushed to help Walsh. Walsh was able to get a license plate number on the SUV, which he gave to CHP officers arriving on the scene."I want to see justice," Walsh said.Pat Walsh,
KFBK said Walsh eased up to let a big rig pull in front of him, and Walsh said that's when a tan Oldsmobile sport utility vehicle towing a car dolly pulled up next to him.
The three men in the vehicle were yelling and making obscene gestures, KFBK reported. Walsh said he couldn't outrun them. The California Highway Patrol said both cars pulled over near the truck scales and got into an altercation. Walsh received six stitches for the gash in his forehead, has a swollen jaw and bruised kidneys, according to KFBK. The suspects have been identified, the CHP said, and investigators are interviewing all the people involved. Officials will decide if any charges will be filed.Walsh, who grew up in Elk Grove, has been KFBK's morning and afternoon sports anchor known as "The Sports Guy" since 1996.
