Arena league football rocks in Daly City

The Scary one has watched all manner of football, the XFL,the UFL and the NFL. Now at the American grassroots level, arena league football. To be precise, a game played by the San Jose Wolves against the Wenatchee Valley Venom of the American Indoor Football Association.

Arena league football as I see it is a slice of Americana that is almost nonexistant, affordable sports entertainment for the whole family, complete with cheerleaders, rock music and a whole lot of room for the little kids to run around.

The level of play would disappoint any diehard football fanatic.Yet this is entertainment at the Kmart or Walmart level minus the smug executives in suits and spoiled jocks.

The less than capacity crowd made noise as wolve howls were played over the PA system. The whole atmosphere reminded me of the wrestling matches I had attended at the Cow Palace in my tender years.

It is not likely that any of these players will make it to the NFL,the big show but they played hard every down. Arena league football has its hockey like moments when players are slammed against the side boards. I didn't exactly catch the drift of the many unique rules. Suffice to say that they ensure that all the games will be high scoring affairs.

The final score wasn't the story. As a member of the Press I felt relaxed. I wasn't having an anxiety attack worrying about making a career killing move around some uptight team executive, celebrity sportscaster or jock with an attitude problem.

I was just a common man hanging out watching cheerleaders half my age shake it up, young guys knock the stuffing out of each other and not obscessing over meaningless statistics. You get it!
