The UFL expands to five teams
This week the UFL added its first expansion team since its inaugural four, placing a team in Omaha, Nebraska. The new Omaha team will be named with fan input, in the same manner the two re-located teams (your Sacramento Mountain Lions and the Hartford Colonials) were earlier this off-season.
With five teams now in the fold and the (an) expansion draft completed, it will be interesting to see if a sixth team is added before the season starts. According to the UFL media guide last season, plans had been originally for two expansions this season. The UFL official website is a little more cryptic about that plan right now, “The UFL will announce further expansion plans in the near future.”
The Omaha…
You may remember the name Jeff Jagodzinski from the interview fiasco a few years ago. Two years into his stint as head coach for Boston College, Jadozinski was famously denied permission to interview for the New York Jets vacant Head Coach position. Jadozinski interviewed anyway and was summarily dismissed a day later. Jadozinski landed on his feet, taking the offensive coordinator role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jadozinski’s first order of business was to participate in the expansion draft for the new Omaha franchise. Twenty players were selected to fill an initial roster of 70, who will compete for one of the 52 roster spots on opening day.
