Welcome back, Earthquakes! The San Jose Earthquakes held a Media Day Friday at 11am for members of the media at McAfee Coliseum. It precedes the home opener for San Jose on Saturday.

The day started with Earthquakes’ practice, one-on-one interviews with the players, lunch, a group interview of Chicago Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco, and Fire practice. Media were also able to pick up their season credentials and parking pass for tomorrow’s game between the two teams.

The Earthquakes were dressed up in Adidas gear and there were a lot of Spanish media.

The Fire were dressed up in Adidas gear with Best Buy on their shirts.

The grass on the field was soft to the touch and praised.

The weather was hot, however, while waiting for Blanco to appear on the field, cool, invigorating breezes swept through the stadium.

The Spanish-speaking Blanco played with Club America in Mexico before joining Chicago. Through translation, Blanco “…thought that the MLS was easier than Mexico, but found out it was much tougher. It’s hard to generate a lot of opportunities.” He stated that tomorrow’s game would be a “…tough game. They (San Jose) want to win. It’s their opening game.”

Teammate Calen Carr also talked about the team star. “He’s a hard worker. There’s no super-star mentality…Playing alongside him gives you confidence and makes you look better.” Carr, a Cal Berkeley Alum, will be playing in Oakland for the first time. He said that it would be “…special for me with friends and family…” and Carr was also appreciative of the warmer “weather.”

The majority of the Earthquakes’ games during the season will be played in Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium, but a few are being hosted by Oakland.

San Jose kickoffs their home opener Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 1:30pm versus Chicago.
