Coach Dennis Green proclaimed, “You can come up with all the clichés you like to tell the fans in Sacramento that we will be as agile, fast, powerful and dare I say it, as predatory as Mountain Lions, when we take on our opponents in the United Football League this season,” a very animated statement the menacing coach who once prowled the sidelines of the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.

The Sacramento Mountain Lions will be led by head coach Dennis Green, who in his first United Football League season led the former California Redwoods to a 2-4 record. His returning running back Cory Ross, who is among 20 players protected by the Mountain Lions, led the league in rushing with 462 yards in 2009.

The Sacramento franchise of the United Football League has its new nickname: the Sacramento Mountain Lions. The team’s colors and logos have yet to be revealed.

The Mountain Lions, not to be confused with the local McClatchy High School or woeful Detroit “Lions” are the re-branded California Redwoods. The Redwoods (2-4) were one of the four inaugural UFL teams and played their home games at AT&T Park and Spartan Stadium in the Bay Area. The Mountain Lions will play their home games at Hornet Stadium, on the campus of California State University, Sacramento.

The nickname was chosen as part of the “Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make The Call” promotion, in which fans provided names and voted for the new moniker.

To Coach Green’s bravado, the Mountain Lions do feature the UFL’s most productive feature back, Cory Ross who lead the league in Rushing yards.

No scheduling information has been released at this time.
