The Los Angeles Galaxy put 2 goals into the net tonight to defeat the San Jose Earthquakes in their first matchup of the season. Landon Donovan and David Beckham both found the back of the net in the first half of the game putting the momentum in the Galaxy’s favor for the night.
2 minutes into the game it looked like the Earthquakes would start the game off with a goal. Ryan Cochrane put in a header crossed over from Corrales. The linesman ruled it offides. Tough call for the Quakes, it didn’t look offsides from the camera replays. After this, the momentum shifted to the Galaxy for the rest of the game.
The scoring for the Galaxy started in the 9th minute when Landon Donovan took control of the ball outside the box and brought it forward crossing it over to David Beckham. Beckham couldn’t have been in a better place, wide of the Earthquakes defender and at the top of the box. Beckham found the net shooting the ball right through quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
Score 1 for the LA Galaxy, and Beckham scores his first MLS goal.
The second goal for the Galaxy came in the 37th minute as Landon Donovan lobbed a quick high shot right over the head of Cannon, who had charged out to try to stop Donovan.
The expansion Earthquakes had some great chances on goal, but could not break through Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin and the Galaxy defense.
The Earthquakes start their regular season with a 0-2 loss against their biggest rival.
Stats:
Beckham, 7th minute goal, assist from Donovan
Donovan, 37th minute goal, assist from Beckham and Gordon
Gordon, 7th minute yellow card for holding
Kamara, 77th minute yellowcard for holding
