SJ Earthquakes acquire Defender Eric Denton

SAN JOSE, CALIF. –- The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Wed, April 2nd that they have signed MLS Veteran Eric Denton. Eric will be a key player on the defensive team for the Quakes. In pre-season play, Eric has helped the Quakes to an impressive 5-1-2 record against professional competition.

Eric is no stranger to the Bay area. He played college soccer for the Santa Clara University Broncos. He played 83 games for the Broncos, including leading the 1999 team to the NCAA championship. He was also a two time All-American.

Eric started his MLS career in 2000 . He played for 6 years, starting his career with DC United. During that time, he appeared in 160 games, had 148 starts, and scored 5 goals with 19 assists. He did not play MLS in 2007.

Denton played from 2002 – 2004 with the Columbus Crew. In 2003, he was named the team’s Defender of the Year when he started for 25 games and scored 2 goals and an assist. He also helped the team to finish 2004 with an 18 game unbeaten streak and won the MLS Supporter’s shield.

In 2005-2006, Denton played for the Colorado Rapids during their 2 year conference final appearances. He had 5 assists in 2005, reaching a career high point.
