Just as the baseball season is about to open, I was invited to attend a screening of a new movie about the story of the 1957 Little League champions. These young men were not from the United States but from Monterrey, Mexico.
They were not the first foreign team to play in the World Series but they were the first team from outside the United States that won.
The story is based on a true story and on the book “The Perfect Game” written by William Winokur.
It is a very sweet, gentle and sentimental story as it shows how a group of young boys form a team and with grit and determination set off to follow their dream. They do not know that the odds are stacked against them. These young men are driven to perfection by a coach who played baseball in the Major Leagues but was working in the steel mill in his home town of Monterrey.
The boys had never been out of Monterrey. They came to the United States expecting to play in one game and then go home. That did not happen. These young men, who were 50 pounds lighter and several inches shorter than their American opponents, never quit. They had to deal with racism for the first time in their lives. They played as a team and they went on to win all 13 games and the championship.
If you love baseball you will love this story. If you a have child that plays Little League, take him or her to see the movie. You will love it.
