SAN JOSE, CALIF. –- The San Jose Earthquakes announced that they have traded to acquire John Cunliffe from the Chivas USA team. John Cunliffe will be coming to the Quakes and Chris Pozniak will be going to the Chivas. Cunliffe played in 15 games last season for the Chivas USA.
The Earthquakes picked Cunliffe because they feel he has shown the ability to score goals in the MLS, according to the Earthquakes General manager John Doyle.
In his MLS debut in 2007, he played against Toronto FC and got an assist to Sacha Kljestan to help them win 2-0. He scored his first MLS goal in July 2007 against the KC Wizards, and he finished the season with 3 goals and an assist.
Cunliffe is a native of Bolton, England. He grew up in the youth ranks of Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, and then came to the US to play soccer for Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. In college, he led his team with 29 goals and 16 assists in the 2006 season.
Pozniak leaves San Jose after he was drafted 10th in the 2007 MLS Expansion draft.
