SAN JOSE--One story that leaped out at me today was the brawl that took place in the Quebec Minor Junior Hockey League playoffs in a brawl that took place with former Patrick Roy's son Jonathan who plays on the Quebec Ramparts.
Jonathan and the Ramparts were playing Saturday against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Normally we cover the NHL on this page and since Patrick Roy is a former NHLer and he coached his son and this game and this story has been the talk of hockey the last 24 hours here's what happened.
In the second game of the QMJHL playoffs in the second period Jonathan and the Ramparts were down 7-1 and since they were taking a beating on the scoreboard Jonathan decided to give the Sagueneens a beating on his own.
First Jonathan was egged on by his father and coach Patrick to attack the Saguendeens goaltender Bobby Nadeau. Jonathan than broke away from on an ice official that had just stopped one scrap Jonathan then attacked Nadeau who was minding his business and standing in front of the goal net. Jonathan Roy then ripped off Nadeau's mask and started punching Nadeau.
Nadeau then was on the ice covering up and Jonathan continued punching Nadeau. After Jonathan was finished with Nadeau he out stretched his arms in celebration and gestured towards the crowd.
Sebastien Rioux of the Sagueneens then left the penalty box and fought with Jonathan on the ice. Rioux has been suspended for six games for leaving the penalty box. Jonathan Roy has been suspended for 12 games for the rest of the season and it might include games for next season as well as depending how far the Ramparts go into the playoffs.
For NHL Hall of Famer Patrick Roy and the Ramparts coach he will be suspended for the rest of the season too 12 games for encouraging his son to fight Nadeau after the official told Jonathan to stop.
Commentary: Patrick Roy is a Hall of Famer an ex-NHL goaltender and now he's coaching his kid which could add up to be the worse ingredients. When you grow up in an enviorment of an that kind there is a lot expected of you and Jonathan couldn't even come close to it as he's one of the worst goalies in the QMJHL with 3.96 goals against.
So what to do? Fight and Jonathan did and he made a horse's rear out of himself getting out there pummeling the opposing goaltender who did not even say one word to Roy.
After watching the replay and further discussion with my colleagues the call by QMJHL commissioner was a good one. And let's see if Jonathan learns anything after missing the rest of this season and the beginning of next season. What Jonathan really needs to learn is how to stop goals and stop taking it out on the opposing goaltender who happens to be the best in the league Nadeau has 2.63 goals against.
Jonathan will not measure up to his father's NHL talent and it's frustrating to him but if this is the way he's going to prove himself he needs to get a 9-5 and get out of hockey.
