Charleston, SC. – The San Jose Earthquakes have swept the 2008 Carolina Challenge Cup. The Quakes had a 3-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls at Blackbaud Stadium. This is an impressive achievement because the Earthquakes are the first team to with all three matches in the tournament’s history. This is also the second time the Quakes have won this Carolina Cup in the club history.
Two games in a row Kei Kamara scored a goal. Kei has 4 goals so far in the pre-season. If his pre-season performance is any indicator, he is going to have a great season this year. He scored the goal in the first half of the game; in fact it was in the first 30 seconds of the match!
In the second half, Gavin Glinton scored the second goal of the game for the quakes. The ball was sent out of the backfield and pushed over the defenders, setting Gavin up to shoot a low ball past the Red Bulls goalkeeper Zach Thomton.
In the final minutes of the game, San Jose brought home the third and final goal. This followed a penalty kick from Ramiro Corrales that the goalkeeper stopped, but could not control. This resulted in both teams converging quickly on the uncontrolled ball, and when it was all done, the ball had reflected off the Red Bulls defender Eric Brunner and into the net.
Where to next? The Earthquakes continue the pre-season by returning to the bay area to practice on March 25th and 26th. They will then proceed to travel to Portland to face the Portland Timbers (USL First Division) in their last pre-season match on March 28th. The match will be held at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex at the University of Portland at 7:30pm.
