Charleston, S.C. – the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Charleston battery in the Fifth Annual Carolina Challenge Cup on Wednesday night. Charleston Battery is a USL First Division team.

This is the second win in the Cup for the quakes. They also beat Toronto FC in the opening round of the tournament (1-0) last Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium. This leaves the quakes with 6 points going into the final round which should be enough to clinch the tournament.

The quakes will play their final match of the tournament on Saturday night against New York. The Battery will take on Toronto FC as the first match of a scheduled double header.

The conditions they played under were quite challenging. During the first half there was significant wind, rated around 40mph. In the second half there was a strong rainstorm. This was a great test for the new Earthquakes team to rally and play well together, even under trying weather circumstances.

The Earthquakes played very well in the back field. They stopped the Charleston offence from shooting or setting up many plays. They held them to only 4shots on goal for the game.

In the first half, the Charleston Battery jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the quakes. This was from a corner kick that was sent right into the open feet of Darren Spicer.

Ramiro Corrales scored the first goal of the game for the quakes in minute 26. In a great play, Ned Grabavoy fired one past the midfielders that Corrales dribbled in and cleared past the keeper for the Battery.

It took until the 70th minute for the quakes to take the lead. Ramiro Corrales had a hand in this one. (Or a foot). He crossed it over to Kamara on a great through pass. Kei touched the ball two times and fired it past the Charleston goalkeeper Wiggans.
