SACRAMENTO - Brad Miller, the Sacramento Kings' big
center, broke his leg Saturday night and won't be
available for the stretch drive. Now the team is three
key players short after trading away Chris Webber and
Doug Christie.
The Kings will still get into the playoffs, but how
far they go will depend upon when Miller comes back.
It might be just about playoff time before Miller can
think about playing again.
Now everybody has to play hard every game. There won't
be any ability to take a game off and that's going to
put a lot of pressure on the Kings.
Webber's not getting the playing time he desires out
in Philadelphia, so getting rid of him seems like an
idea. Webber was injured for portions of the last
three seasons, and if you have a guy for only half the
time and your paying the kind of money the Kings were
paying, it's just not quite that good a deal.
Kings general manager Geoff Petrie got as much as
anybody could have for Webber - that was the reason
for the trade. Most people thought the best thing to
do with Webber was to cast him adrift because they
were paying him so much money and he was injured so
often.
The Kings are are going to have to fight like heck to
get into the playoffs now that they're a really
shorthanded team without Miller. Miller is a great
center - he can get in there and get rebounds and make
a pretty good offense. Now Sacramento is going to have
to play 6-foot-9 James Skinner at center because
there's nobody else.
Mike Bibby's been playing great, Cuttino Mobley will
come back, and the Kings have to learn to play
defense. Fortunately, there are enough bad teams in
the NBA that they can still make the playoffs.
