When the announcement that Tiger Eldrick Woods was returning to golf on Tuesday it was no surprise as he had made it a possibility in his press conference that he was thinking of coming back. Woods announced on Tuesday that he would play in the PGA Masters Tour scheduled for April 8th after being out of the game for four months.
Woods said in a statement that he is returning to golf but still is working on his professional and personal make up and that he had a lot of work to do. Woods will try and play in competitive golf again and he is just 4 tournament titles away from breaking Jack Nicklaus second place record who has 73 and Tiger with 71.
"The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect, after a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I'm ready to start my season in Augusta." Woods said on Tuesday.
Woods won his 82nd Worldwide on November 15th at the Australian Masters the last tournament he played in before he had the truck accident outside his Florida home some 12 days later. It was also the night that Tiger's wife Elin Nordegren allegedly broke the back of the truck's window in which Tiger was driving in with a golf club to either rescue him out of the truck or to hit him with the club. Tiger has denied that there was any domestic violence in the marriage at anytime during his last press conference.
Woods is also going to face two issues that he dreads but will not say aloud when he returns back to golf. One is the questions he will receive from the press corp about specifics of his affairs and some of the names that will be dropped of his ex-lovers and what was going on between them and number two when he's out in the galleries the cat calls and snide remarks he'll hear on the range about his affairs. He's just going to have to get ready to suck it up and take it or it could take him out if his game.
"I have undergone almost two months on inpatient therapy and I'm continuing my treatment, although I'm returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life." said Woods Tuesday in a written statement.
There has been talk that Woods will enter in the Tavistock Cup Exhibition that is scheduled next week in neighboring Orlando and then the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill a tournament where Tiger was champion and a six time winner.
"When I finally got into position to think about competitive golf again, it became apparent to me that the Masters would be the earliest I could play." said Woods. Although there is the talk about Tiger returning next week for Tavistock it's more than likely his first appearance will be on April 8th at the Masters.
The Masters is a drawing card for the highest TV ratings in golf and this could draw down more viewers than ever with Tiger's return on the 8th and for the first two rounds of the tournament that will be televised on ESPN and CBS Sports weekend.
"Obviously the ratings will be off the charts, it will be interesting to watch, not only for the reaction for him, but from the fans, the media and the players, I would venture to say he might be nervous" said Heath Slocum
Woods missed the cut in 2006 at Winged Foot after his father died and at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Woods won while playing on an injured knee. So there is no telling which Tiger could show up at the Masters on April 8th but either way it's a new chapter and a return for him to get back to competitive golf while trying to rebuild his personal life and career.
