Sportstalk: The UConn Huskies are synonymous with win streaks and finishing off West Virginia last week for their 72nd straight win. Now they get ready for the NCAA Tournament and need to win their next six games in a row to grab their second consecutive title and seventh overall. Michelle looking to the Tournament there's not much standing in their way is there?
There are only two teams standing in their way, Nebraska and Stanford. Since the Huskies have already beaten Stanford, Nebraska is the only other undefeated team on the women's side. UConn will win the tournament and really that's all that needs to be said.
Sportstalk: Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey took a question at the press conference after the conclusion of Brittney Griner's two game suspension for punching Texas Tech's Jordan Barncastle and breaking her nose on March 3rd saying, "I was disappointed, that's a teenager who made a mistake, and she's good for the women's game, there is no value in that in women's basketball, it was horrible. It was horrendous. It wasn't anything we are proud of, it isn't anything Brittney is proud of." Griner who wrote a written apology for the incident went on to play against Oklahoma in a 59-54 loss with 13 points and 10 blocked shots. Michelle will Brittney Griner be remembered mostly for the punch or for the great success she's had this season?
She will be remembered for being an awesome talent that go sick and tired of players from other teams using her for a punching bag. As I said last week, Jordan Barncastle was not some innocent victim. She should have been suspended also. Now ask yourself this question. Do we spend this much time talking about fights in the men's game? No we don't, so stop giving this story so much ink because it involved women.
Sportstalk: On Friday night the San Diego State Aztecs 24-8 (11-5) came out a winner over the New Mexico Lobos 29-4 (14-2) 72-69. The Aztecs beat the Lobos earlier this season with a January 5th victory with a 74-64 win. Are the Aztecs just that much better than the Lobos and that much prepared and the Lobos who had a great season but when you look at this game where was the let down at?
The Aztecs needed the win to get into the tournament. New Mexico has only lost one game in the past 60 days, and San Diego State is much better than people think, as well as the Mountain West being a tougher conference to play than the Pac-10 this year.
Final Thoughts:
1. I have started a public tourney bracket on ESPN called "Soul In The Hole." Sign up and test your basketball knowledge against mine. I'm sure you'll win, but it should still be fun. BTW my team is called "Black N Bitter." With a name like that you should be feeling all warm inside.
2. Ben Rothlisberger has managed to screw up another year for the Steelers before the season ever gets started. First, his motorcycle accident (riding without a helmet on), second, his sexual assault allegations last year when he was at Pebble Beach, and now another sexual assault allegation. Ben, you got enough money to drink at home. Think about that the next time you want to go out.
3. Good luck to all the team who made the NCAA Tournament. And a big WOW to the North Carolina Tarheels. I never thought I would see you win a championship and then not make it to the tournament the next year. I know you'll be back, but WOW!
