Sacramento – It was announced today that the California Redwoods UFL franchise will be leaving the Bay Area and moving up I-80 to Sacramento. The Redwoods finished the inaugural UFL season 2-4 and split their three home games between San Francisco’s AT&T Park and San Jose State’s Spartan Stadium.

Sacramento marks the second, of the four inaugural teams, to change homes this offseason. Last month the team formerly known as the Sentinels packed their bags and moved from New York to Hartford, Connecticut. The moves mark a commitment from the league to live up to their motto of “NFL talent in non-NFL cities.” Interestingly enough, also on the horizon is the planned expansion of two more teams for the 2010 season.

General Manager and Head Coach Dennis Green and company will face an interesting challenge in sports-starved Sacramento. While the Rivercats are fan favorites and the Kings have a die-hard following, the city has witnessed a steady decline in attendance for the Kings and the demise of the mostly-successful (at least mostly competitive) Monarchs franchise.

“Sacramento is a natural home for the UFL in that it is a major market that we believe will support a professional football team and we are excited to be here,” said UFL Commissioner Huyghue. “We are bringing sports fans in the area an exciting and high-quality product on the field at an affordable price and hope they will embrace the team who will become a part of the local community.”

Two things work in the city and UFL’s favor. The schedule is only five games with reasonably priced tickets and the game is decent product. There is enough former NFL talent to raise an eyebrow as you glance at the roster and (at least last season) the quality of play on the field was sound, even if it lacked the spectacular sensationalism of the NFL.

Like the Sentinels, the Redwoods will be leaving their nickname behind and the Sacramento team will boast a new moniker. Click here to suggest a name (UFL website).
