ALAMEDA--Perplexed faces is the best way you could describe people when asking about the latest word on Oakland Raider linebacker Marquis Cooper 26 and Detroit Lion linesman Corey Smith 29, regarding their well being on Sunday after discovering that both players were on a 21 foot vessel and lost at sea off the Florida coast line after they left Clearwater Pass on Sunday.
Smith and Cooper who were both team mates in 2004 on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also lost with two other passengers Will Bleakly and Nick Schuyler. The Coast Guard is reported to be canvassing a 750 square mile where they were last reported boating and are using a 47 foot boat to search for the four men.
The 47 foot Coast Guard boat is being assisted by a helicopter in the search. The coast guard has assured the families of all the men that they are doing all they can in the search in the choppy seas which have seven feet high seas at 20 knots. Tampa Bay Meteorologist Rick Davis said the water was "extremely high and choppy".
The Raiders team senior executive John Herrera and the Lions Public Relations Bill Keenist are keeping tabs on the situation.
Smith in 2008 had 30 tackles, three sacks, an interception in 12 games for the Lions and also played with the 49ers. Cooper played five seasons with the Bucs in 2004 and 2005, Smith had 30 tackles during those years. Smith and Cooper played together in 2004 for Tampa Bay. Cooper also played with Seattle, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh before joining the Raiders.
