Gary Araki who passed away suddenly on Monday, was a good friend to all of us and his contributions to Sports Radio Service will be sorely missed.
Gary, a San Jose State graduate was a veteran in radio and reported on San Jose sports for over
two decades. He worked with former KCBS traffic and sports anchor John Atkinson as his broadcast engineer for the San Jose Giants.
Gary would later produce and co-host a radio show with Charlie Mallonee in Monterey.
Gary was soft-spoken but his personality was full of life. In the words of Michael Duca, Gary was thoughtful, helpful, always with a laugh, and gentle. No one could have described him better.
He also had a great sense of humor and was a true friend. Gary was also a fixture at the annual SAP Open tennis tournament and instead of
sitting at press row near the court, he preferred the hockey press box high atop HP Pavilion and watched from a bird's eye view.
Gary also had an affinity for buses and in his office were books and miniatures of buses and trolleys amid the computer motherboards, monitors and other hardware stuffed into his crowded San Jose office where he worked as a self-employed computer systems administrator.
Most of us never had the opportunity to tell Gary how much he meant to us but perhaps the ultimate tribute is that our lives are much richer
because he made an unforgettable impact on everyone he came in contact with.
