Sampras makes a return to San Jose

SAN JOSE- Almost a hour late on the schedule, but finally at 8:02 PM on Monday Night, the much anticipated return of Pete Sampras in a exhibition tennis match to start the evening session at Day 1 of the SAP Open which is being held at the HP Pavilion this week.
Sampras who retired from the ATP tour little more than six years ago still plays exhibition matches, and he defeated Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-4.
The crowd at the HP Pavilion was supporting Sampras through out the match, and the flashes from their cameras could be seen in the upper and lowers sections.
Originally when this exhibition was announced, Marat Safin from Russia, who was a former #1 player in the world was to take on Sampras, but Safin withdrew from the SAP Open due to a injury, and Tommy Hass who is the third seed in the 2008 SAP Open, and will play his first round match on Wednesday as the second event in the evening session.
