SAN JOSE - It took a while - and they made it quite interesting in the end - but the San Jose Stealth finally treated their home fans to their first victory inside HP Pavilion on Saturday night, beating the Colorado Mammoth, 12-10.

At the same time, San Jose handed the Mammoth a defeat in the team’s first game of the season away from home.

Forward Gary Rosyski, San Jose’s leading scorer, led the way with a season-high four goals in the game, which was still up for grabs with two minutes remaining. Meanwhile, fellow forward Ryan Boyle, who has been named the NLL’s Rookie of the Week twice already, added a pair of goals.

The Stealth made its lingering problem with scoring on the power play look like ancient history Saturday night. A week after going 0-for-9 on the power play in a loss to expansion Minnesota, the Stealth cashed in on their first man-advantage opportunity against Colorado (2-2) when Brad Dairon slid a shot past Mammoth goalie Gee Nash at the 9:41 mark of the first period.

Almost two minutes later, Curt Malawsky converted another power-play chance for the Stealth, and his goal gave his team a 2-1 advantage.

The Stealth jumped out to a 4-2 lead on a Cam Sedgwick goal with 1:44 left in the opening period, but Colorado came back with two unanswered goals to tie the game.

From there, the game would be constant give-and-take, neither team holding a lead larger than two, and Colorado led, 6-5, at halftime.

Rosyski caught fire in the second half, his second goal giving the Stealth an 8-7 edge with 21 seconds left in the third quarter before Colorado’s Matt Alrich scored to tie the game again.

A few minutes later, Rosyski got a little creative, flipping the ball over his own shoulder and past Nash to put San Jose up again. But true to form with most lacrosse games, the Mammoth tied it back up two-and-a-half minutes later.

Rosyski and Boyle soon teamed up to give San Jose the lead for good, as their two goals put the Stealth ahead by two goals with 4:31 remaining.

With the victory, the Stealth now share first place in the West Division with the Calgary Roughnecks, while the Mammoth fell into a second-place tie with Anaheim.

NOTES: Forward Scott Ranger looked to be seriously injured after being forced hard into the boards by Colorado’s Nick Carlson following a failed fast-break attempt in the first quarter. Ranger lay facedown on the field for a few minutes, kicking his legs in pain, before jogging to the bench.

Carlson was assessed a two-minute penalty for boarding, and the Stealth converted the power-play goal moments later.

Before Saturday night’s game, the Stealth’s junior team, consisting of boys aged 10 to 14 years old, beat the Mammoth’s junior squad, 11-9. The two teams, who seemed to play just as physical as the big boys in the main event, also scrimmaged for a few minutes at halftime.
