The Zulewski report

The New Jersey Devils occupy first place in the NHL Atlantic just by two points over second place Pittsburgh who is favored to win the Eastern Conference. At this point it’s just too early to tell if the Devils lead is going to snow ball into much of anything. The Devils always have good goaltending with a certain Marty Brodeur between the pipes who’s piling up the numbers ladies and gentlemen and he knows how to kick butt and win hockey games.

It’s too early to evaluate if the Devils will get in the way of the Pens chances. As long as the goaltending holds up and Brodeur stays healthy they could be the team that's the newspaper's favorite in the winning point spread.

Still head shaking that Sharks scored five on Miller: The Sharks scored five goals on the number one goalie in hockey last Saturday night against the Buffalo Sabers in an impressive 5-2 win in San Jose.

Buffalo goaltender Brian Miller is still the man and I'm slightly prejudiced because he was an old Michigan State man but, he's tough. It just goes to show you the Sharks are thoroughly dominating at home and we still have that lovely issue called "lets get by the first round and worry about the other three before we get to celebrate the lovely holding of that lovely silver chalice."

The Red Wings would not be a playoff team right now and it's somewhat disturbing because injuries have really been killing the Red Wings at this point. The team has been down for a time and have 58 points and trail in third place behind Nashville and Chicago in the NHL Central.

Tomas Holmstrom had his early season problems, the Red Wings will come back at 100% and sure enough they'll be a factor.

Tom's PGA look at Tom Watson winner at the Mitsubishi: Tom Watson had a one stroke win over Sr. Cup newcomer Fred Couples. Couples is one of those special enigmas in his own right. Couples has been a good guy and with that duel going between Watson and Couples that was something special they are very lucky individuals.

Watson is 60 years old and he won this tournament and it took sometime but he got his. He may not have many years left in golf so he's grabbing the gusto now. Once he gets them he needs to cherish this.

Cal Bears basketball update: The Pac Ten has not been the most stellar division to cover and they're rated higher than they should, let's put it that way. The Bears heading into Arizona State on Thursday night are a full game and in first place ahead of everybody from Arizona State to UCLA.

That's five teams that they're ahead of, the Bears are 5-2 and have games this week with Arizona State and Arizona for Thursday and Saturday respectively.
