Sportstalk: Senior looks like the dysfunction continues at Texas Texas, former head coach Mike Leach is suing for slander after the school said that he locked Craig James in a closet. James says he loves the school, not too crazy about the ex coach. In the aftermath of all of this does this set the school program back a step or two or will the program be just fine for next season?
The only thing setting Texas back these days is the bitter memory of that BCS game. This Leach and James thing will blow over faster than a prairie wind across the panhandle.
Sportstalk: Lane Kiffin joins the happy family at USC. Kiffin was questioned about recruiting issues when he came to Tennessee and USC has had more of it's share of just recruiting issues other items including issues with star players like Reggie Bush, Matt Lienart and basketball star O.J.Mayo just to name a few. Will Kiffin be a plus to the program or will he get the overhead projector treatment at SC as well with the way that circus has been ran for the last few seasons?
It seems likely that the overhead is already plugged in and being wheeled into place, replete with a fresh bulb. Pete Carroll was smart enough to plan an exit strategy when he saw the clouds accumulating on the horizon and Kiffin has enough experience as the designated fall guy that he can play that role when needed. When the mess is straightened out, Lane's successor can benefit from a clean slate and THAT will be the coach for the long-term future.
Sportstalk: Toby Gerhart is opting for the money and dreams and is entering the NFL draft after telling Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh and running backs coach Willie Taggart thanks for the memories. Gerhart could have played another season but he's going for the big time. George in cases like this it's about now or never and why risk an injury in college when you get the chance grab the reign, you work around college students did Gerhart make the right choice to enter now?
For the reason just mentioned, sure. Jahvid Best made the same choice based on the same criteria but will not do nearly as well in the draft because of his medical history. Toby has nothing to lose, really, given what he can earn in the League. A Stanford degree is valuable, of course, but he can finish up somehwere along the way if he wants to, and all indications are that he is bright enough to do just that. He is already demonstrating his intelligence with this present choice.
