Goalie Rob Blasdell and the Stealth fell to the Calgary Roughnecks on Saturday, 14-10.

It was a typical game between the San Jose Stealth and the defending National Lacrosse League champion Calgary Roughnecks. The eager crowd of 7,028 at HP Pavilion was treated to a close affair for much of Saturday night’s home opener, but the Stealth came up just short in a 14-10 loss.

After three quarters of give-and-take between the two teams, the Roughnecks broke the game open by scoring four unanswered goals, an outburst that the Stealth (1-1) could not recover from in suffering their first loss of the season.

The Roughnecks exacted a bit of revenge on Saturday night, as they had their own home opener spoiled in a 12-10 loss to the Stealth the night before.

As is commonplace in lacrosse, this game was won by the team that capitalized on key opportunities. Calgary cashed in on power-play chances as well as on fast breaks, while San Jose was unable to take advantage despite having the edge in power-play minutes.

A minute into the fourth quarter, San Jose’s Derek Malawski and Brad Dairon executed a pretty high-low play to tie the game at 10-10, but seconds later, Calgary forward Tracey Kelusky raced down and threw one past Stealth goalie Anthony Cosmo to give the Roughnecks the lead for good.

Kelusky had five goals and two assists to lead the Roughnecks on Saturday, while Ryan Boyle and Kevin Fines each had two goals for the Stealth. Gary Rosyski dished out five assists and scored a goal for San Jose.

The Stealth will have next weekend off and will re-convene on Friday, Jan. 21 in Arizona to play the Sting. The next night, San Jose will return home to play the expansion Minnesota Swarm.
