Marco Sturm’s overtime goal gave the Boston Bruins a 2-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers Friday in the NHL’s annual regular season showcase, the Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston.

An announced sellout crowd of 38,112 watched hockey being played at the 98-year-old home of the Boston Red Sox, which also hosted the AFL Boston Patriots games in the 1960s, as well as soccer, basketball and boxing. The game was broadcast nationally on NBC and CBC.

Sturm’s goal came at 1:57 of the extra five-minute session after the Bruins tied the game at 1-1 in the third period on a power play goal by ex-Flyer Mark Recchi with 2:18 remaining. Sturm was parked near the crease and redirected a shot by Patrice Bergeron.

Philadelphia’s Danny Syvret opened the scoring at 4:42 of the second period with his first career goal.

Game-time temperature was 40 degrees with a slightly overcast sky and very little wind. A slight chance of rain or snow was in the forecast, but neither materialized. The rink was positioned across the top of the baseball infield, from foul line to foul line, and from shallow center field to just shy of the pitcher’s mound.

This was the fourth regular season outdoor game. The first three were played in Edmonton, Buffalo and Chicago’s Wrigley Field. There has been no announcement on where next year’s Winter Classic will be held, though New York and Denver are rumored to be frontrunners.
