The Sacramento Kings got off on the right foot for new coach Kenny Natt by overwhelming the Minnesota Timberwolves by a 118-103 score.
The Kings started the game making only one of 14 shots. It took the Kings four minutes to get their first points. They were down by 15-3 at one point. Reason for concern at ARCO Arena.
Sacramento righted the ship to be down only 6 at the end of the first quarter. The Kings tied the game with 6:41 in the half. At the half they led 53-50.
Then it was all Kings in the second half, up 86-67 after three quarters. They coasted in the fourth, up by as many as 23 with 6 1/2 minutes left. Sloppy play reduced the winning margin to 15.
Even with early problems the Kings shot fifty per cent. And they had 26 assists to only 13 turnovers.
Minnesota big man Al Jefferson has 22 points in the first half. The Kings made adjustments to shut out Jefferson in the second half.
Another note of the firing of Reggie Theus is that Chuck Person is gone as well. It seems probable as the "assistant head coach" job will be shared by Rex Kalamain and Jason Hamm.
New coach Natt is 1-0. But the Kings go on the road for four games. Tuesday night in Portland, Friday at Houston, Saturday in New Orleans, and Monday Night the 22nd in San Antonio. Those four games will strike the fear of God into any NBA coach.
Then they face the Toronto Raptors on the day after Christmas.
