SACRAMENTO--When the New Jersey Nets Derrick Favors and the Sacramento Kings DeMarcus Cousins faced off on Monday night it was not the ideal reunion. One thing was Cousins who was picked in the draft at number five is let's face it jealous of the Nets Favors who was picked number three in the draft.
Both come with strong egos and a lot to prove, Favors who went at the Pistons in a 101-98 win threw down twice on the Pistons on opening night last Wednesday the 17th and Favors made it clear he was on a mission, "That's my game, I dunk on people."said Favors.Favors in the contest got eight points and ten rebounds during the contest.
The jealousy of Cousins stems from when Favors was picked third in the draft over Cousins and Cousins had some derogatory remarks about Favors. Cousins feels he should have been picked higher in the draft and was passed up by several teams in favor of Favors.
Cousins has something to prove and he sure looks forward to meeting Favors, "I'm going at their necks, especially the big who got picked before me. I feel I was the best big to come out of college. For another big to get picked before me I have a problem with that." said Cousins.
Cousins is noted for being very firey, competitive and not one for being on the outside circle in the dressing room. Cousins was the center of a melt down with Sacramento coaches last week when he got into a verbal altercation with conditioning coach Daniel Shapiro and assistant coach Truck Robinson and was fined $5,000 for it. As soon as word of the altercation hit the news wires three NBA teams were seeking Cousins but the Kings said they wanted to keep their rookie draft pick.
Cousins was no doubt up for the game against the Nets and he remembers going against Favors in college ball in AAU ball, Cousins and Favors played in draft ball together for the Nets, Kings and the Sixers. Favors said he wouldn't have been sore if he had been picked behind Cousins in the draft and that he would have handled things a lot better than Cousins has.
That's not to say that Cousins was never ever on the Nets radar as a matter of fact New Jersey was considering taking Cousins with the number three pick but the Nets decided to stay with Favors. The Nets like what he does as a big man and like his quickness and is young at 19 years old.
Carmelo Anthony of the Nuggets has requested a deal out of Denver and the Nuggets are considering dealing Anthony to the Nets but are asking for Favors in the deal plus two or three additional players. The two sides have been talking and a deal could be struck soon. But why would the Nets give up such a high draft pick whose role is important and is such an addition to the future of the club?
Nets coach Avery Johnson said that Favors is everything they expected but the business of basketball is at hand and if the Nets want Anthony and Anthony wants to come and play in Newark then Favors could be in a Nuggets uniform sometime before Thanksgiving, "Derrick's coming out to play hard, he's not going to come out and try to prove he was the deserving number three pick." said Johnson.
