Things are looking better in Sacramento. The Kings went from winning 17 games last year to 25 this year. Most fans think it is due to new players, especially Tyreke Evans.

It is more complicated than that. Paul Westphal's comtract was extended. Geoff Petrie is probably the best small city general manager in the NBA.

But it will take quality players at each position to truly get competitive in the league. If you don't have excellent players at every position, other coaches can easily defense your team.

Let's look at the Kings by position:

The "one" is the point guard. And that is the Kings's strength with Tyreke Evans and Beno Udrih. Evans appears to be a coming star in the league and Udrih was very good this year.

The "two" is the shooting guard. Francisco Garcia is the closest thing the Kings have at this position. The Kings need to find scoring in the upcoming draft, a guard will do.

The "three" is the small or shooting forward. Omri Casspi and Andrea Nocioni fit best in this group. But the team and Nocioni have pretty well agreed to part company. Donte Greene is a good second team player.

The "four" is the power forward. The Kevin Martin trade brought Carl Landry from Houston. Landry can score 20 and pick up 8-10 rebounds. Jon Brockman is a good rebounder who the Kings will keep around.

And the "five" is the center. The Kings have two very young centers in Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson. The just is still out on them. Jason has a good shooting eye and Spencer is seven-foot-one.

The NBA draft is in June. The Kings will probably pick the best player available, but it would help if there were a very strong scorer available when the get what is expected to be the third pick.

Then you have to think about a trade. Andres Nocioni and Jason Thompson come to mind, but who knows.

The critical move the Kings must make is who to keep and who to turn loose of.

A good draft and you might think about a much better team in River City.
