By taking the fifth game of the 2010 World Series, 3-1, from the Texas Rangers, the San Francisco Giants have won the fall classic for the first time since their move to the City by the Bay in 1958, and the first for the franchise since 1954. As with their wins over Atlanta in the NLCS and Philadelphia for the National League pennant, they clinched on the road.
The key players were the ones who have done it for the orange and black consistently: Tim “The Freak” Lincecum won both the games he pitched against the equally formidable Cliff Lee. Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner dominated on the mound, as did reliever Brian Wilson. Edgar Renteria showed that he could hit the ball to the right place at the right time, as he did with his three-run homer in the seventh inning of the final game. The shortstop was named MVP of the World Series and now says he is not sure whether he will retire or return. Aubrey Huff broke precedent and laid down an excellent bunt in that frame, after hitting a key home run the previous evening. Juan Uribe was strong at the plate and at the hot corner, and Pat Burrell and Andres Torres both robbed the Rangers in the outfield.
When the Giants’ managing general partner, Bill Neukom, addressed local media before the season started, he assessed the team’s competition sagely, but was convinced that San Francisco was for real. He was right, even though the job got done with some players – like Burrell and Cody Ross – who were not there at the start, and with a trade of catcher Bengie Molina to – of all teams – the Rangers, while Buster Posey came up through the system. It was that sort of adaptability on the part of Neukom and general manager Brian Sabean, put into practice on the diamond by field manager Bruce Bochy that has made the Giants the 2010 World Series Champions.
