For the Los Angeles Dodgers, the final three-game series that will be played this weekend starting Friday at AT&T Park will most likely decide whether they win the National League West title or settle for the league’s Wild Card playoff spot.
For the Giants, it’s a chance to get their younger players a little more experience under their belts. Oh, yes, and there is a real chance to really screw things up for their sworn enemies from the Southland while having really nothing else to play for.
The Dodgers are playing like a playoff team right now. They have won six of their last seven games and are coming off a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, including a 19-11 slugfest that saw rookie catcher James Loney tie a single-game franchise record with Gil Hodges by knocking in nine runs.
Going into Friday’s play, Los Angeles is a half-game behind San Diego for the division lead, while they lead the Philadelphia Phillies by 2 games in the Wild Card chase, with the Phillies 3-1 loss tonight to the Washington Nationals.
Which is more of a reason for the Giants to play well against the Dodgers, this weekend at AT&T Park.
To get on the right track, the Giants are sending Noah Lowry to the mound on Friday, but he has lost his past three outings and has a 7-10 record. His counterpart, Hong-Chih Kuo, is coming off a start against Arizona that saw him surrender only a run on four hits over seven innings.
Rookie Matt Cain (13-11, 4.09 ERA) will go on Saturday afternoon against Greg Maddux, who won his last start, giving up only three runs over six innings at Coors Field.
Sunday afternoon, the Giants’ final game of the season, will pit the teams’ aces against each other. Derek Lowe (16-8, 3.63 ERA) will go up against Jason Schmidt (11-9, 3.56 ERA).
