WASHINGTON--The San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals had a pitching duel going until the seventh inning when starter Brett Tomko lost the shutout and the game when the Nat's Rick Short doubled to deep right and scored Ryan Zimmerman.
Deivi Cruz singled to center and that allowed Short to come around to score to make it 2-0.
Tomko went 6.1 inning surrendering eight hits, two runs, four strikeouts, (7-15 ERA 4.48).
Jon Rauch was the winner for the Nationals (1-4 ERA 4.38). Rauch pitched in the seventh inning for the win. The Giants snapped their five game win streak and lost when they had a chance to catch first place San Diego who lost to the Colorado Rockies 4-2 Thursday afternoon.
Barry Bonds who homered in his previous four games sat out Thursday's ball game. The Giants trail the Padres by five games in the National League West.
J-Dogg's footnotes: Washington Manager Frank Robinson agreed while a miracle could happen for the Nationals the Nats are playing like they have a chance, "If you want to be realistic, you say, what would it take? A miracle, well miracles happen. Not too often but they do happen once in a while. But realistically, yeah, we're looking at it, and probably it’s insurmountable."
The Giants open up a three game series in Colorado on Friday night. Jason Schmidt will miss his turn due to a pulled right groin and Matt Kinney will start (2-0 ERA 1.04) he'll be matched up against the Rockies Jeff Francis (13-12 ERA 5.79).
