Barry Bonds tied Hank Aaron in home runs tonight at Miller Park, in the San Francisco Giants 13-12 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, but it was not to tie Aaron for the most home runs in the history of major league baseball.
Bonds smashed a three-home run that gave the Giants an 11-10 lead; it was the 733rd home run of Bonds’ career, tying him with Aaron for most home runs in National League history.
Unfortunately, the bullpen was unable to hold the lead bringing Giants ever so much to ending without a playoff berth for the third straight season.
Bonds had three hits and drove in six runs, one of those hits being a 403-foot home run off of Chris Spalding, who became victim number 433 to serve up a home run to the Giants leftfielder.
Former Giants third baseman David Bell hit an infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Brewers the eventual one-run victory.
The Brewers battled back from a 4-0 deficit and a 12-10 deficit to take game two of this four-game series, the Giants lat road series of the season.
Tony Gwynn, the son of the legendary San Diego Padres rightfielder helped the Brewers onto victory in the bottom of the eighth, as he scored the first of the three runs in that fateful inning.
Gwynn singled was then sent to third on a Corey Hart double, and scored on a Prince Fielder groundout. Bill Hall then drove in Hart with a single to tie up the game. Geoff Jenkins walked, Hall moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch.
Jeff Cirillo then walked, and then Bell hit a single in the hole at shortstop, but Omar Vizquel was unable to get Cirillo at second base, scoring Hall from third with the eventual winning run.
Ray Durham hit his 25th home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning.
In just two innings of work, Jonathan Sanchez gave up eight runs and eight hits before being replaced by Brad Hennessey.
NOTES: Bench Coach Ron Wotus managed the team, as Felipe Alou was suspended for one game due to the situation involving Jamey Wright hitting Matt Holliday of the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Coors Field. Wright was suspended for three games, and Jose Mesa was also suspended for three games for the Rockies.
