The San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 4-2
at SBC Park on Sunday.
There are still a dozen games left in the 2004 season,
three against Houston and three against the Dodgers at
SBC Park. Then three at San Diego and three at the
Dodgers to end the season.
The Giants now have 84 wins and an even split will
give them 90, a "maybe" for the post-season. Seven
wins makes 91, eight would be 92, and that should be
enough to get them into the playoffs.
Sunday's game was an example of players 'showing up.'
Kirk Rueter pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing
only five hits. Reliever Dave Burba was touched for
two runs, a walk followed by a pinch-hit home run by
Terrence Long. That tied the game, 2-2 at the time,
until a double by J.T. Snow in the 8th. Dustin
Hermanson finally closed the game and got the win.
The hitting star of the game was Snow, 2-for-3 with
all four of the Giants' RBIs.
The Houston series should be fun as the Astros are one
game behind the Giants for the wild card and have a
27-7 record since August 15th. The Dodgers are leading
the West and San Diego is only four games behind the
Giants. If the Giants win, say, four or
five of six against the Dodgers, they could still win
the division.
