If the Arizona Diamondbacks want to get back into the National League West race, they better start winning games immediately.
Dan Haren, who is one of the reasons that the Diamondbacks are in the race accomplished a first in their game against the San Francisco Giants.
Haren struck out 12, as the Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 2-0 at Chase Field.
It was the first career shutout for Haren, who was acquired by the Diamondbacks in the off-season from the Oakland A’s.
In pitching the sixth complete game of his career, Haren scattered just four hits, as the Diamondbacks stayed within 4 ½ games of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West.
Haren received support from Chris Snyder and Stephen Drew, who hit solo home runs for the Diamondbacks off of Matt Cain.
This was a hard fought loss for Cain, who pitched seven innings, giving up those two runs on seven hits, while not walking a single batter and striking out seven.
Pablo Sandoval continues hit National League pitching at a rapid pace, as he picked up two of the four Giants hits on the evening.
Conor Gillespie, who earlier this year was playing for the Wichita State Shockers and then Salem-Keizer in the short season Northwest League picked up his first major league hit in the top of the eighth inning while hitting for Ivan Ochoa.
