SAN FRANCISCO- Giants Manager Felipe Alou had a choice to make, and he made the correct one when he saw starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez falter.
Alou summoned Kevin Correia, and the right-hander pitched 3.1 innings of fantastic baseball and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 10-6 at AT&T Park.
This was the fourth time this season that Correia pitched at least 3.1 innings, the last coming on August 17 versus the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
“I was ready to get Correia in that game. I wanted him in the game. It’s not a feeling. You know the guy’s going to do well. He’s riding a high right now and I have confidence with his pitching. It’s too bad we can’t pitch him every day,” said Felipe Alou.
Sanchez was roughed up in his first ever start at home, as the left-hander allowed five runs (four earned), five hits in just 4.2 innings of work.
“Sanchez did not have it to begin with. I don’t know if the delay (affected him) or what. He warmed up and then he had to wait. I don’t know ho many minutes (it was), but that was tough. What I liked was the way he (put up) the two zeroes-he really reached back,” said Alou.
The offense was right on, as both Pedro Feliz and Omar Vizquel each drove in three runs to pace the Giants onto victory.
Feliz helped start the six-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning, after the Giants fell behind 4-0.
It was the 22nd time this season Feliz had a multi-rbi game, passing Ray Durham.
Durham walked three times, tying his season high. Durham also walked three times against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 28 at PNC Park.
Rockies catcher Chris Iannevva hit his first major league home run to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
It was a special night for Mark Sweeney, as he played in his 1,000th career game and walked while batting for Correia in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Vinny Chulk came on to replace, but lasted only 0.1 of an inning before leaving with an injury.
“Of course. We’re missing three guys now-all righties,” said Alou about calling up a reliever from the minors.
Mike Stanton came on and recorded the final two outs.
